Skorts are back in fashion, just like flatforms, shiny lips and all the other Y2K fashion trends. We’re not surprised, as it was only a small change from the pleated tennis skirts we purchased in spring to a skirt/shorts combination. Hidden shorts reduce our fear of a sudden summer breeze blowing in and putting on a show. The 2022 trend falls into two categories, unlike the skorts we wore in the past: sporty and sleek and sophisticated. Many of these don’t look like skorts unless you show your friend the shorts underneath.
PAIR A PLEATED TYLE WITH CRISP BASICS
Although skorts and pleated skirts are popular now, they can easily become too much like a prep school uniform. This silhouette can be made to look sophisticated and chic without looking like you’re copying the Gossip Girl. The best way to do this is with simple, elegant basics and luxe accessories. A simple black crewneck t-shirt and white sneakers, combined with simple gold chains necklaces, stud earrings, and a crossbody chain strap, should work.
ELEVATE A MINI WITH SHADES of BEIGE OR CAMEL
Skorts have shorter skirts than other skirts, so they are usually much shorter than what you might feel comfortable wearing. You don’t want to look too young, or like you are still wearing last weekend’s party outfit. Instead, stick with warm neutral colours like beige or camel. These colours tend to look more expensive than bright colours and delicate florals. Using fabrics like suede, cashmere, or silk, you can also create a luxe feel.
Go for a FULL SPORT-INSPIRED ENSEMBLE
Wear tennis-style skorts with sneakers and a Rubgy pullover or graphic tee. Coterie member Coco Basey’s take on Wimbledon whites is a great example of fashion-and-function blending.
FUN PRINTS & COLORS WILL STEAL THE SHOT
You don’t want to look like you bought your Liberty-print skort at the junior’s section. Instead of adding more patterns, wear it with simple staples like a white hoodie, matching kicks, a black T-shirt bodysuit, and flat strappy sandals. Don’t wear anything too loose. A fitted sweatshirt will make you look more polished than a loose, oversized design.
POINTED SKORT SILHOUETTES: DON’T
In 2013, Zara’s Zara piece was owned by literally every fashion blogger. It was loved back then, but wearing it now will make you look like you are either stuck in the past or heading to a costume party. We don’t want that. This style is no longer appropriate. Instead, opt for a more modern silhouette like a wrap or pleated one.
